Aloha 2013

Some years seem more significant than others. I won't pretend any were ever easy. If you aren't learning, you aren't growing.

Life is full of so many opportunities that inevitably we change. Nothing can really stay the same.

For me, this was a year to challenge myself. I jumped into adventure and signed myself up for the unexpected. I surprised myself! Not only did I survive it, I changed!

A dear friend once told me, that if something makes you uncomfortable, instead of running away, run towards it and embrace it. It feels like standing on the edge of a cliff and everything is screaming to turn around, but there is a whisper, and it just says, be patient.

Faith and hope can get you through anything. Courage is only realized after you've gone thru it. I wish I could say I was brave, but I was honestly terrified and doubt was always lingering in the background. I just chose to ignore it.

I have loved every moment of 2013! I have met some of the most wonderful people. I am truly grateful for every amazing person that has entered my life. I am honored to share any part of my journey with you. I wish you all many blessings in this new year!

With all my love,

Warning for Parents

An unfortunate incident happened yesterday at the intersection of Kuulei Road and Kainalu Drive in front of the fire station in Kailua. A young boy on a bicycle was hit by a car.

According to my young son, who had just entered the crosswalk on his own bike, heard the collision behind him and turned to see the boy fly off his bicycle and land a few feet away.

The vehicle stopped and as he was uncertain what to do, he waited for the boy to get up, which he did. Then in a panic, as my son felt he was in danger in the crosswalk, sped home on his bike.

When he told me what had happened at home, his face was pale and he was really shooken up.

He is so young, I never thought I would have to explain what to do in an accident, but as it could have easily just have been him who got hit, I sat him down and did my best to explain what he should do and if he is witness to such a tragedy again, which I hope is never.

It's terrible enough to have to explain to kids, "watch out for strangers," and "watch for cars," "look both ways before crossing a street" (which he does, thank goodness), but to tell him what to do when something goes wrong. As a parent, I didn't want to say it or think it.

I checked the news feeds and paper and couldn't find any information on this incident, which makes me worry that this incident was never reported. I send prayers out to this unknown child, who my son described as possibly a fifth grader who may attend Kailua Elementary School and was wearing a red T-shirt. I truly hope he is in good health.

To the driver, as scary as what happened was, I hope you reported it yourself and make certain this child is okay.

Parents, we all have so much we still need to tell our kids. I wish he had known to render aid and get help. He was too scared. He didn't know. And its sad to say, but he was never too young. If he was old enough to ride a bike and be out there with the cars, I can't assume all drivers would be so respectful or cautious as I would hope.

Share your wisdom with the next generation. Give them the knowledge they need to tackle any problem.

Love and Aloha,
Maile Mitchell-Akita

Rainbow Days

I am living my life in full color! One of my more colorful days has to be this past Monday at the Color Vibe Run.

Wonderful friends and my older son, Kai who spontaneously agreed to go, made it the most fun day I have ever EVER had RUNNING. Yes, I admit it, I went running and I liked it.

The exploding clouds of color packets that almost made you believe that this might actually be what it's like if you ever could catch a rainbow.

Hundreds of other crazy colored people running alongside us, felt other worldly. Everyone was so friendly and happy, they would smile and cheer each other on. (There is a metaphor in here about life. I won't go inspirational quote on you here...but I know you get it.)

At the end of the 5k, the rainbow colored humans happily jumped, danced, and cheered at the rocking dance party as more cloud packets burst in the air.

Live your life in color, its so much more fun.

Smile, and send cheerfully honest love and support to everyone. It comes back to you, and at the end of this journey of our lives, you will be rewarded with your own rocking dance party!!!

Almost Addicted

My boys have both started their adventures in outrigger canoe paddling. I'm certain I'm more excited than they are.

The moment my older son got out of the canoe after his first practice, the grin that spread across his face, said it all. "This is awesome! My mom was right, I'm so happy she insisted I give paddling a try. She is the best mom in the whole world!" Okay, maybe he wasn't thinking all those thoughts, but a mom can dream. ;-)

I am thrilled that they actually like it. The first time I got into a canoe, it truly took me by surprise at how much fun it was. Of course, this is a team activity and good attitudes and a shared love of a wonderful sport you can do on the water together, makes a difference. Actually that is true in anything.

Always look to the positive. It wastes your time to dwell on negative thoughts. Help others and live a life of compassion. That is the heart of any team player.

If you wish for everyone to be better than you, and you help them achieve their best effort, your team does even better, and ultimately you benefit also. It's not about being better than anyone else, but about being the best you!

There is no "I" in team! We all know this, yet, people create drama out of jealousy or poor thoughts. Give yourself and everyone else peace. And just help everyone! That does not mean telling anyone what to do, but showing them how. You create a giving legacy of paying it forward each time you share your knowledge and your gifts with others.

Hawaii Legacy Builder's, is founded on helping others achieve success by being a network of knowledgable and gifted individuals in many diverse fields of expertise. We help you find solutions and connect you to other people and networks, ultimately creating beneficial relationships with greater networks.

We charge nothing, and if you need help, we are more than happy to offer our resources to helping you achieve success. Wishing you many blessings in every area of your life.

Love and Aloha,
Maile Mitchell-Akita

Free and Happy

I proudly live my life as I choose. Its great others notice, but when people say negative things,  its always a reflection of themselves. Things they like about themselves, don't like about themselves, or jealousy.

I will not live my life in accordance to what anyone else thinks. This is my life and only I can walk my journey.

My personal battles are my own. Some wounds heal faster than others, but scars are reminders of what you have overcome. Wear your scars proudly and as they heal, your life will continue to transform as you wish it.

Be confident in yourself and live above the drama and continue your own journey. Only you can walk in your shoes.

People will enter in and out of your life. Every relationship, is always an opportunity to learn and grow. If drama arises, your reaction is the only thing you can control. Your life will only change if you wish it. No one can stop you from being who you are.

Regardless of what anyone thinks, choose to live with gratitude in your heart and blessings will overflow in your life.

For those that are living in drama, wish them well, for they are learning their own life lesson. Some are harder than others.

I believe in the best you. Wishing you an amazing life.

Love always,

Peace

Peace to me is living my power in every moment by simply being present.

When I am with someone, it means, putting down the phone and enjoying the magic of our time together.

There is such a beautiful synergy when you make a connection with others, you can't do that in a phone call, or a text and definitely not in an email. There is nothing more special than breathing in a moment of time with a wonderful friend.

Spend your life's moments with people that fill you with joy and make you smile. They have the power to brighten your day and heal your spirit. They eliminate stress and you truly are blessed with an overwhelming sense of peace.

There is peace in trust, in friendship, and love.

Life is a journey, travel with friends :-)

Aloha Friday

Waking up before sunrise is never easy. My eyes want to stay shut and the thought of leaving my comfy bed is near unthinkable. The strategically placed phone with my alarm clock app, insists I move to make it stop.

Half an hour later, the sky is streaked with brilliant orange, red, and a golden sunrise that is calling me to venture outdoors.

I soon find myself walking up the path to my favorite beach, and my fellow paddling friends have also  arrived.

Moments later we are far off shore and paddling a mini armada of outrigger canoes into the beautiful bay. We take our first break after 15 minutes or so, and take a look around at the most stunning view of Hawaii.

Waking up early was so worth it! This is my favorite way to start the day!

My next goal, is to get my kids addicted to waking up to the  awesomeness of our beautiful world.

Blessings for the day: a happy seal sleeping on the sand at the Mokulua's and a baby honu (turtle) that popped its head up next to our canoe.

Love the always clear water showing off its many colorful coral beds and just a few waves to surf make paddling one of my favorite sports.

Wishing you a fabulous adventure in your own life. Enjoy every moment!

Hokule'a

Today I lived history. Hawaii's ambassador on the ocean, Hokule'a arrived in Kailua Bay. An armada of canoes went to greet her and escort her safely to shore.

We transported her crew with the help of multiple canoes to the sands of Kailua beach.

Conch shells blew and a hula Halau chanted a beautiful Hawaiian greeting. The crew of Hokule'a also chanted a response. It was Hawaii's cultural traditions brought back to life once again.
I was so impressed with how many people were there to be apart of this beautiful ceremony.

Exciting to know they will do it again when they depart Kailua bay and arrive at their next destination in Waimanalo. I'm honored to have the opportunity to dance with my hula Halau in Waimanalo in a few days and be apart of this cultural ceremony.

Today, I paddled with my paddling Halau, Lanikai Canoe Club and was so happy to see my friends from Kailua Canoe Club,  as well. There were other canoe clubs out there today, forgive me, I didn't get a chance to meet them. I hope all the canoe club's around the island participate if they have the chance.

It was magical to be on the ocean with Hokule'a surfing along the waves next to our fleet of canoes. Grateful for such a wonderful opportunity.

This was a moment in my life, I won't soon forget.

Wishing you many blessings. Live every moment of your life.

Live Your Life!

As a parent, you always want to put your children first. I did that for many years. As they grew older, I realized forcing them into sports or other activities wasn't fair if I wasn't doing it to.

A few years back, my boys and I started learning jujitsu. After doing that for a while, we were kind of burnt out. I still miss it tho, and hope to return later, but my boys needed to be outdoors and not in the dojo.

We started biking and hiking at the beginning of their summer vacation, and I really wanted to be active on the water. Thought I would get them into surfing, they weren't as excited about that as I was, and I begged them to sign up and try outrigger canoe paddling.

They said no, but I signed myself up anyway. I said, if I hate it, you don't have to do it, but if I like it, you have to at least give it a try also. They did agree! I'm holding them to it, as I have become addicted to paddling. My next new toy has to be an OC1, problem is, there are so many out there and I would need 3.

My older son has promised to try paddling with his classmates for his high school in just a few weeks. I'm planning on signing up my younger son in a kids winter program.

The best part of canoe paddling is that its a team sport and you make so many friends. People are always happy at the beach and practice usually finished around sunset. Watching sunsets on the beach after a great workout with all my friends is my favorite memory of my summer. Now, I'm looking forward to spending my beach days with my boys.

Life is truly sweet. Each day is a gift. Enjoy every moment and live your life.

Wishing you many blessings.

Spellcheck twice, print once!

Good point from Mashable's Pete Cashmore, "printer ink really seems to be one of the world's most expensive liquids."

It is honestly cheaper to donate your old printer to a charity and buy a new printer instead of ink refills.

I have tried to buy printers based on the price of the ink refill, and making sure they are refillable cartridges... I wish my kids knew how much it cost to reprint all those essays and homework assignments they keep getting minor typos on and a stack of wasted paper later.

New rule: spell check twice, print once!

Wishing you a productive week!

Long Summer Days

Today, was hot! I honestly have been enjoying these sunny  summer days as I've spent almost every day of it, outside!

It's a funny thought, thinking back to my little kid days, and my mom calling out to the neighborhood to come home...now my kids text me, "mom, when are you coming home?" I wish I could force them outdoors with me, but their generation has their own kind of  fun, that I don't seem to  understand.

I do love our family time when we all spend the day splashing in the pool. And we always eat dinner together around the dining table as a family. That is something I know my kids will remember when they get older, and hopefully carry on that tradition.

Happy Week ahead!

Strength

We all have heard how resilient the human spirit is. Especially when we are pushed to our limits, how we react shows our true strength.

Do you get angry, sad, or do you take a breath, refocus, and move forward? I have done all of the above and more and more I decided that, well things happen for a reason. Sometimes it's a lesson or sometimes it's a blessing.

I also have decided that I want more blessings and feel I no longer want any more trivial tests of my character or strength.

Manifest your life as you wish it and stop worrying about the trivial things. Life is to short to not enjoy the crazy lessons to. Someday it will be a part of your amazing life story.

Father's Day Adventure

It was a beautiful day for a Sunday drive, all the way out to Nanakulibeach Park.
It was my first time swimming at this beach. A born and raised Kailua girl, I rarely venture farther than the mile to my favorite Kailua Bay.

Nanakuli beach had crystal clear water and a kid friendly surf swell that washed the kids back and forth on the sandy shore. They loved it and it looked so fun, I had to try it to. It really was fun and the water was so cool on a very hot summer day, I didn't want to get out. The need to reapply sunscreen, got me moving and back under a shady tent for most of the day.

I think my boys would have loved it today, so I'm planning on going back out there again.

A fun day of canoe racing at the Father's Day regatta, and so happy to spend a lovely day with my teammates at our awesome potluck BBQ.

A few hours later, I was back home chilling in the pool with my boys and getting things ready for a delicious Father's Day BBQ with my ohana.

Another truly fabulous weekend with a collection of memories all caught on camera. Captured moments to last a lifetime :) I am loving this life and my amazing family and friends to share it with.

A day in my life:

Family Breakfast
Shopping, Errands, and a workout bike ride, with so much walking. I told my son, it's just extra cardio.

Afternoon, we had a Boat operating lesson with my dad.

Then we went for a swim.
Played with the dog.
Enjoyed my zen moments watering my plants and squeezed in some hula practice.
And finally Family Dinner!

I love days like this. Today was filled with unexpected adventures. It doesn't have to be over the top, just enjoying one happy moment to the next. I hope you have a happy memorable weekend.

Regatta Race Day

My first regatta race day was an unexpected experience. I knew the parking was going to be crazy and was expecting hundreds of people.

The surprise was really the Aloha!

The participating canoe clubs were there in force and it felt like everyone was truly all apart of the same ohana. It didn't matter the color of your jersey, everyone watched out for everyone else and it had to be the friendliest sporting event atmosphere I have ever experienced.

I played high school sports, and absolutely believe in good sportsmanship, but this was good behavior with overwhelming aloha.

Okay, it was only the first race, and everyone could just be in a really great mood, or maybe its a beach thing. Honestly, the beautiful setting, the perfect weather, and everyone having a great time, who wouldn't be in a great mood?

There was also shopping! I saw lots of things I wanted. Yep the sunglasses, these float. Problem was I wanted three pairs and ultimately decided I couldn't decide. And the guy selling them said he would have new colors next time ;)

I am looking more forward to my next practice, as I get to enjoy more time paddling and less time standing around, but next race day is a week away and I'm excited to see what happens next.

Wishing you a great week!
Love and Aloha,
